Two people, including an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, were tragically killed in a multi-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning, June 17, 2025, on the 101 Freeway in Studio City. The crash occurred near the interchange with the 170 and 134 freeways, close to the Tujunga Avenue exit.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a black Kia SUV was stopped in the lanes, and its occupants exited the vehicle. A box truck then collided with both the Kia and the individuals outside of it. The victims—a man and a woman—were pronounced dead at the scene. One of the victims was later identified as 31-year-old Deputy Marcos Pena Jr., who was a passenger in a ride-share vehicle and served at Men’s Central Jail.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities have not released information on why the vehicle stopped in active freeway lanes. The westbound 101 was temporarily closed for investigation and reopened around 7:30 a.m.
