Los Angeles, CA — A tragic multi-vehicle crash early Monday morning on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles claimed the lives of an LAPD sergeant and another individual, shutting down southbound lanes for nearly 10 hours through the Sepulveda Pass.
LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran of the department, was killed after stopping to assist at the scene of an earlier two-car crash just after 2 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Joe Zizi. Moments after stepping out of his vehicle to help, Deng was struck by oncoming traffic. He was transported to a hospital but later pronounced dead.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell described Deng as a dedicated officer who had spent much of his career in the department’s Mental Evaluation Unit, providing compassionate response to those in crisis. Deng had been promoted to sergeant two years ago.
“He died a hero,” McDonnell stated at a press conference. “He was out there caring for others, putting their safety before his own.”
Mayor Karen Bass echoed the city’s grief, saying, “The sergeant was an example of somebody who lost his life attempting to save others.”
The second person killed in the incident has not yet been identified. All southbound lanes of the 405 at Moraga Drive remained closed for several hours as the investigation continued.
